JIL SANDER WOMEN’S SPRING/SUMMER 2010 “They go through seas and deserts. There, in the most isolated places, they start to play with elements.” (John Anthony Thwaites) “They trace a line, simple or complex, clean or jagged, that is always a stroke on the “skin” of the (…) metal, wood, flesh, body, sand, stone or earthen crust.” (Germano Celant) The garments are manipulated, adapted to nature, almost eroded. Interrupted yet sabulous surfaces, with a colour palette that ranges from white, ivory, sandstone to midnight blues and navy. The junction of coarse materials and transparency reveals the inner structure of tailored jackets and coats. Scissor-cut finishing for jackets paired with creased trousers or rolled-up shorts. Over-sized blazers wrapped-up, displaying frayed edges. Cut and paste shoulder-lines, partially detachable sleeves for compact cotton canvas jackets and dresses. Grained silk tweed as well as cotton-silk fil-coupé to produce a corroded effect on both tailored and shoulder pieces.Prolonged jackets are belted and combined with a voluminously draped trouser-skirt, to create an easy yet controlled silhouette. Multi-layered gauzes end in faded outlines, whilst the stratification of glistening organza panels create a mineral iridescence.Knitted insertions as well as loose pockets are applied to sheer surfaces. Crispy ruffles and petal appliqué redefine the texture of day dresses and pencil-skirts, as an eruption of material. Pumps and sandals are suspended on a oxidized metallic heel, with a carved wooden plateau and a functional intersection of leather straps across both shoes /ankle and feet. The surface of leather handbags reinterpret the texture of earth, complemented with antique-finishing metallic fastenings and handles. Semi-precious stones - Agate, Labradorite, Obsidian, Milky Quartz – in a monolithic shape are molded in a golden ring that gently curls around the finger. A wearable stone. Jil Sander Men’s Spring/Summer 2010 Lightness is the driving force to newly define the masculine wardrobe. A figurative exploration of the human body as a way to celebrate its natural grace. The continuous search for effortless elegance and natural ease. The paintings of Japanese artist Foujita - “Combat” and “Grande Composition” - serve as inspiration: the use of colour, the diffused sense of freedom, the natural dynamism of the bodies and the sharpness of his line. Colours are extracted from the canvas, almost vaporised and frozen onto fabrics: a sequence of beige, cream, ivory, cloud-grey and icy blue. Gradations of white dominate a focused palette of barely visible colours, injected with oxygen to amplify the natural glance of ethereal brightness. Intense navy compliments the chromatic harmony.Outlines are brightly framed with a spontaneous stroke of gold. The theme of polo as an expression of elevated leisurewear. Polo-shirt components integrated in the knitwear or smartly applied to the tailoring. The iconic polo morphs into jackets and knitted cardigans, maintaining the sensual comfort of a casual garment. Underwear elements evolve into tailoring-detailed tank-tops and vests. The piqué texture redefines the surfaces of classical suiting.Tailored jackets are imbued with a sense of ease, with softened shoulder lines and a wider cut through the body. Reduced weight for half-lined blazers, carefully deconstructed, almost suspended.The jacket button is extended off-centre, creating a bended asymmetry that gently wraps the torso.A rounded yet precise outline casually corresponds with the free-moving body. Soft cotton poplins, ultra-light taffeta and fine textured linens have an unexpected crisp papery feel.
